Today Bleeker Street has shared the first official trailer for acclaimed directors David and Nathan Zellner’s (Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter, Damsel) Sundance sensation, Sasquatch Sunset; a film that is being dubbed “a Unicorn of a movie” and the greatest Bigfoot story ever told.
Directed by the Zellner brothers, from a script written by David Zellner, Sasquatch Sunset stars Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road, “Daisy Jones & The Six”) and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Vivarium) and follows a family of Sasquatches – possibly the last of their enigmatic kind – deep in the untouched wilderness which embarks on an absurdist, epic, hilarious, and ultimately poignant journey over the course of one year. These shaggy and noble giants fight for survival as they find themselves on a collision course with the ever-changing world around them.
Commenting on the genesis behind their particular take on the Bigfoot sub-genre, the Zellner brothers said, “We’ve been interested in Sasquatch/Bigfoot lore since childhood, when we first saw the infamous Patterson-Gimlin film which ushered the legend into the modern era and established the iconic look of the creature … Most accounts of Bigfoot sightings revolve around it scurrying away upon discovery, which are all interesting but eventually led us to wonder, what else is it doing? What are its behavior patterns? Not just the noble and majestic characteristics we’ve become accustomed to through folklore, but also the less flattering, often absurd traits that reflect the full spectrum of human and animal behavior. Traits that are entirely relatable, directly and indirectly, whether we like it or not. It’s that uncomfortable relatability that makes way for the inherent comedy, tragedy, and poignancy of these creatures, and what ultimately drew us to make this film.
In an effort for authenticity, we wanted to tell this story entirely from the Sasquatch’s point of view, and we’re committed to creating the most accurate representation possible. Everything that you see in this film is true to how they are in real life.”
The film is produced by Lars Knudsen, Tyler Campellone, Nathan Zellner, David Zellner, George Rush, Jesse Eisenberg and David Harari with Ari Aster serving as an Executive Producer.
Sasquatch Sunrise releases exclusively in select theaters April 12 and opens nationwide April 19, 2024. Until then, we’ll leave you with a year in the life of a singular family broken down into a bite size friendly 2 minutes to tide you over until the film releases.
