It has now been confirmed that English screenwriter and novelist, Robert Thorogood is developing an adaptation of his 2021 murder mystery novel, “The Marlow Murder Club” for PBS Masterpiece and UKTV. The book was chosen as the Booksellers’ Association’s Book of the Month when it released whilst the second book in the series, “Death Comes to Marlow,” was nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe award for Best Cosy Crime novel published in the USA in 2022.
Produced by Monumental Television, and set to be directed by Steve Barron, the series stars Samantha Bond (“Downton Abbey”) as retired archaeologist Judith Potts, who lives alone in a faded mansion in Marlow. One evening, while swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. When the local police refuse to believe her story, Judith befriends local dog walker and empty nester Suzie and unfulfilled vicar’s wife Becks as they launch an investigation of their own. Eventually asked to assist the official police investigation, led by newly promoted Tanika, the women must piece together clues, interrogate dubious witnesses and face real danger as they work against the clock to stop the killer in his tracks.
The series also stars Jo Martin (“Doctor Who”), Cara Horgan (“The Sandman”) and Natalie Dew (“Sandylands”).
Commenting on the adaptation, Thorogood said, “After over a decade of working on Death in Paradise, I’m thrilled to be creating a brand new murder mystery series for TV … I can’t wait for audiences to join Judith, Becks and Suzie on their adventures as they solve a series of fiendishly puzzling murders.”
“The Marlow Murder Club is executive produced by Debra Hayward, Alison Owen, Alison Carpenter, Susanne Simpson, Philippa Collie Cousins, Barron and Thorogood and produced by Jane Wallbank. ITV Studios is handling international sales for the series and PBS is the North American distributor.
