10 of the Greatest Nuptial Movies Ever Made

Those joyous occasions, weddings, and all they involve are a staple of romantic comedies. It makes perfect sense, given the wealth of material they provide – the proposal, the preparations, the parties, and the inevitable panic.

In MARRY ME, Jennifer Lopez plays a pop superstar who impulsively decides to marry a total stranger – a maths teacher played by Wedding Crashers star Owen Wilson.

To celebrate the release of the film DVD and Blu-ray on 16 May 2022, here’s a look at some of the best wedding-themed films ever!

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

Julia Roberts plays a woman who is not exactly over the moon when she finds out that her best friend (Rupert Everett) is getting married. Why? Because she realizes she’s in love with him! And she will pull out all the stops to prevent the wedding from happening.

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Hugh Grant became a big star off the back of this massively successful British film, playing a rather bumbling singleton who keeps bumping into Andie MacDowell over the course of, as the title indicates, four weddings and a funeral. Do the pair fall in love and live happily ever after? Time for a rewatch surely.

The Wedding Singer (1994)

Adam Sandler is on top form in this riotous comedy romance as a popular wedding entertainer who falls in love with a waitress (Drew Barrymore). So far, so good, except both of them are engaged with other people. The course of love never runs smoothly does it?

Runaway Bride (1999)

Julia Roberts again, this time as a woman who keeps getting the jitters and cannot bring herself to say “I do”, and keeps leaving her betrothed standing alone at the altar. A handsome reporter (Richard Gere) is assigned to write a story about her, and, well, you know what happens next.

Wedding Crashers (2005)

MARRY ME star Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn play friends who go to weddings, uninvited, to ply their womanizing charms on unwitting guests who have been swept away by the romantic mood of the day. Which is all fun and games for the pair of them until Wilson finds he has fallen in love with Rachel McAdams – which threatens to bring their hijinks to an end.

The Wedding Planner (2001)

MARRY ME star Jennifer Lopez plays the title role in this hit comedy – a woman who spends her days ensuring the path of true love runs smoothly for excited couples planning their very special day. A slight problem with her latest assignment, however – she falls in love with the groom (Matthew McConaughey), which is a big no-no in this line of work.

The Wedding Date (2005)

Debra Lessing, who doesn’t want to go to her sister’s wedding as a single person, hires an escort (Dermot Mulroney), who she plans to pass off as her boyfriend. What she doesn’t foresee is that her date for the occasion might well turn out to be something longer term.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

Nia Vardalos, who also wrote this smash hit film, is a Greek woman who falls in love with a non-Greek man (John Corbett), and must convince her extended family that it is a good match. Audiences fell in love with the story and the film became a box office sensation – which proves that everyone loves a good wedding!

Father of the Bride (1991)

Steve Martin is a dad reluctant to give his eldest daughter’s hand away in marriage, in this poignant and charming early 90s comedy. A remake of the 1952 film with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor, it also spawned a sequel and is being remade this year with Andy Garcia.

Marry Me (2022)

Jennifer Lopez plays Kat Valdez, half of the sexiest celebrity power couple on Earth with hot new music supernova Bastian (Maluma, making his feature-film debut). The pair are about to be wed in a ceremony that will be live-streamed. When Kat learns, seconds before the ceremony, that Bastian has cheated on her with her assistant, she has a meltdown on stage, questioning love, truth, and loyalty. Then she locks eyes with a stranger in the crowd – divorced high-school teacher Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson)… and fate steps in.

MARRY ME WILL BE RELEASED ON DVD AND BLU-RAY ON 16 MAY 2022
