Maika Monroe Goes Full Gothic Killer in Official Victorian Psycho trailer

Victorian Psycho movie Maika Monroe

Bleecker Street has released the first full trailer for Victorian Psycho, Zachary Wigon‘s upcoming gothic horror adaptation of Virginia Feito‘s novel of the same name. The trailer follows the film’s debut at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it reportedly received a seven-minute standing ovation, and arrives ahead of its September 25 theatrical release.

Maika Monroe (It Follows, Longlegs) stars as Winifred Notty, a governess whose polished manners conceal a deeply disturbed and murderous side. Drawing comparisons to both Jane Eyre and American Psycho, the story unfolds at the secluded Ensor House, where Winifred is hired to care for the children of the eccentric Pounds family. As the pressure of the household and its increasingly unsettling atmosphere intensifies, her carefully maintained composure begins to unravel. Strange nighttime disappearances and increasingly erratic behavior pave the way for a brutal confrontation on Christmas morning.

Joining Monroe are Jason Isaacs, Ruth Wilson, and Thomasin McKenzie. Monroe took over the lead role after Margaret Qualley exited the project during development last year.

The Cannes premiere ended on an emotional note when Wigon dedicated the film to assistant director Jim Corr, who died shortly after production concluded. Speaking to the audience, the director reflected on the demanding shoot, saying the team was constantly pushing themselves to their limits before paying tribute to Corr, describing him as “a phenomenally lovely person to work with.” Victorian Psycho marks Corr’s final screen credit.

Produced by Wigon alongside Dan Kagan, Sébastien Raybaud, and Nick Shumaker, Victorian Psycho looks to retain the novel’s distinctive mix of grisly violence and wicked humor. Author Stephen Graham Jones once praised Feito’s book for being the kind of story that “drips blood” while somehow leaving readers smiling.
