INTERVIEW: Marcus Dunston Talks Themes of Teen Bullying and Transformation Addressed in ‘UNHUMAN’

Filmmaker Marcus Dunston (The Collector, The Neighbour) and his frequent co-writer Patrick Melton (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Feast, the Saw franchise) are back with their latest genre movie, Unhuman.

Releasing under the Blumhouse TV and Epix network banners comes this horror-comedy in which seven wayward students come face to face with a thriving pack of savage “unhumans.” The group’s loyalties are put to the ultimate test in a wild and grisly showdown for survival as the students battle to take down the vicious zombie creatures… before they end up killing each other first.

Featuring a cast of exciting up-and-coming young actors including Brianne Tju (“I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Light as a Feather), Benjamin Wadsworth (Your Honour), Uriah Shelton (Freaky) and Drew Scheid (Halloween, Fear Street: 1978), the group combines brilliantly, delivering a wonderful on-screen chemistry that’s impossible to resist. (You can watch our interview with the cast here).

Dunston, inspired by the works of both John Hughes and Stephen King, tells a tale that’s more than just a survival horror, as he smartly incorporates themes of bullying and transformation amongst a group of teens, to form a satisfying whole.

Ahead of the film’s release this Friday, June 3, CinemaChords’ Ashley Northey sat down with a jovial Marcus Dunston to speak about the genesis for the film, motivational playlists and the shorthand he shared with Melton in the writers’ room.
