Trust and Temptation Collide in Netflix’s THE RIP Trailer Starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck

Netflix has unveiled the first full trailer for The Rip, a high-stakes crime thriller set in Miami. Inspired by true events, the film follows Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon) and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Ben Affleck) as they confront a dangerous windfall that tests both loyalty and morality.

The story examines how trust can unravel under pressure. “It begs the question: what do you do when faced with this massive temptation?” Affleck reflects. “What does that mean? What’s it like to see that up close? And then also, who do you trust?”

Complications arise not just from the external threat, but within Dumars and Byrne’s long-standing partnership. “Dumars has just been promoted,” Affleck explains. “We’ve been peers for our [whole] careers, and now he’s been made the boss of the group.” The trailer hints at mounting tension between the two, with Byrne warning, “You wanna steal this rip, just say it out loud! I don’t trust you right now, and that’s a problem.”

Emphasizing the stakes, the film’s writer-director, Joe Carnahan says: “[They] can’t leave, which makes them targets for a bunch of bad guys. And now they have to count the money, not knowing necessarily who to trust, including one another.” Damon adds, “They know that it’s almost certainly cartel money that belongs to very dangerous people who are probably going to come get it. They’re on the clock, and they have to start thinking of defending where they are because they can’t just leave.”

The film also stars Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, with Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler.

The Rip hits Netflix on January 16.
