Trailer for hauntingly relevant ‘LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND’ teases a hypothetical dystopian future

Netflix has just debuted the official trailer for award-winning writer and director Sam Esmail‘s (“Mr. Robot”), apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind ahead of tomorrow’s World Premiere on Wednesday 25th October at AFI Fest.

Written for the screen and directed by Esmail, based on the National Book Award-nominated eponymous novel by Rumaan Alam, the film centers on Amanda (Academy Award winner Julia Roberts) and her husband Clay (Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke) who rent a luxurious home for the weekend with their kids, Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie). Their vacation is soon upended when two strangers — G.H. (Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) — arrive in the night, bearing news of a mysterious cyberattack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs. The two families reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.

The film is produced by Sam Esmail, p.g.a., Chad Hamilton, p.g.a, Julia Roberts, p.g.a, Marisa Yeres Gill, p.g.a, and Lisa Gillan p.g.a, with Executive Producers Barack and Michelle Obama, Tonia Davis, Daniel M. Stillman, Nick Krishnamurthy and Rumaan Alam.

Following tomorrow’s world premiere at AFI Fest, Leave the World Behind will release in select UK cinemas on 24th November and on Netflix from 8th December.
