MUBI Drops First Clip and Images of Coralie Fargeat’s Cannes-Buzzed Body-Horror ‘THE SUBSTANCE’

After securing worldwide rights to Coralie Fargeat‘s (Revenge, “Sandman”) The Substance, a Working Title Films production, MUBI has now released an exclusive clip and first-look stills from the upcoming body horror film, which is already enjoying plenty of buzz following its in competition world premiere at this year’s 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat (Revenge), the film stars Demi Moore (Corporate AnimalsIndecent Proposal), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in HollywoodPoor Things, Death Note), and Dennis Quaid (Cold Creek Manor, D.O.A, The Intruder). And whilst little has been revealed regarding the plot, At the Cannes festival press conference, the festival director Thierry Frémaux explained how, “the film is a genre film, a gore film, an assertive body horror. Wear protection, because at the end there is a lot of blood on the screen…. It looks as if it’s gushing through the screen!”

Also, on the MUBI website, the following text appears on the film’s page:

Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself?

You. Only better in every way.

Seriously.

You’ve got to try this new product. It’s called The Substance.

IT CHANGED MY LIFE.

It generates another you.

A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect, you.

And there’s only one rule: You share time.

One week for you. One week for the new you.

Seven days each. A perfect balance.

Easy. Right?

If you respect the balance… what could possibly go wrong?

Fargeat’s latest feature, currently boasting a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has drawn comparisons to the works of David Cronenberg and Brian De Palma. Critics have also heaped praise on Demi Moore’s performance, with The Telegraph declaring in its 5-star review, “Not for 30 years has she owned a film with anything like this certitude,” and Total Film asserting that, “Moore delivers arguably a career-best performance.”

MUBI will be releasing the film theatrically in the UK and Ireland although the release date is yet to be announced.
