Hulu Developing “The Haunting of Alejandra” Series Adaptation of V. Castro’s La Llorona Horror Novel

The Haunting of Alejandra V Castro Hulu

Hulu is developing “The Haunting of Alejandra,” a series adaptation of V. Castro’s 2023 eponymous horror novel, with Steven Paul Martinez attached as writer and executive producer. The project is being produced through 20th Television, alongside executive producers Eva Longoria and Cris Abrego of Hyphenate Media Group, and Gigi Saul Guerrero and Raynor Shima of Luchagore. Castro is also producing.

“The Haunting of Alejandra” blends psychological horror with social commentary, drawing on Mexican supernatural mythology. The story follows Alejandra, a millennial lawyer and new mother, who struggles during maternity leave, only to discover her challenges go far beyond the usual postpartum anxiety. She soon faces a deadly confrontation with La Llorona, one of Mexico’s most infamous legends.

Martinez recently contributed to two seasons of CBS’s “So Help Me Todd” and began his career in television, producing episodes of “Bull.” He also has a feature film project in development at Paramount, titled Stealing Santa.

Guerrero has established herself across both film and television. She made her feature directorial debut with Culture Shock, part of Hulu/Blumhouse’s “Into the Dark” series, which subsequently earned her a first-look deal with Blumhouse. She also directed Jenni, a biopic chronicling the life of Mexican-American singer and actress Jenni Rivera, produced by Donald DeLine and Mucho Mas. Most recently, she wrote and directed the short film El Lazo De Petra, a “Shot on iPhone” project for Apple that has been viewed more than 87 million times on YouTube.

Her upcoming film work includes directing Santa Muerte for Screen Gems and 10/31 for Orion Pictures. On the television side, Guerrero has directed episodes of “The Purge” for USA/Syfy and the pilot for “La Hora Marcada” on Vix. She was also attached to a CBS pilot adaptation of the novel Lola.

Longoria and Abrego’s Hyphenate Media Group has produced series including “Nexaca,” “Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain,” and “Land of Women.” Their upcoming projects include the Netflix comedy The Fifth Wheel, which Longoria is directing. She is represented by WME, Linden Entertainment, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.

The book the series is being adapted from is available to purchase now here, and V. Castro has a new novel, Maria, the Wanted, which was published this past February 10th and is available here.
