WORLDBREAKER INTERVIEW: Brad Anderson Talks Female Empowerment in a Quasi-Future World Overrun by Monsters

Voltage Pictures releases the sci-fi action thriller Worldbreaker today, January 30, a tense survival story in which a young woman is forced to face a war she cannot escape.

Directed by Brad Anderson (The Machinist, Session 9, The Call) from a script by Joshua Rollins (Infinite Storm), the film stars Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Resident Evil), Luke Evans (High-Rise, Message from the King), Billie Boullet (“A Small Light”, “The Worst Witch”), and Mila Harris (Coyotes, No Exit).

Set on a remote island, teenage Willa (Boullet) survives under the watch of her battle-hardened father (Evans), while her mother (Jovovich) fights monstrous Breakers—humans mutated into killers by a mysterious infection. When a strange girl (Harris) washes ashore, Willa must confront a war that has finally arrived at their doorstep and decide whether to run or fight.

Ahead of the release, CinemaChords spoke to Anderson about bringing Worldbreaker’s alternate, quasi-future world to life, his mix of modern soldiers and medieval-inspired swordplay, and his preference for a slow-burn, character-focused approach to the creature-feature genre, an approach he says mirrors the method he used on Session 9 and which he found far more effective and impactful than relying on spectacle alone.
