Lionsgate has officially greenlit an animated John Wick feature, with Keanu Reeves set to reprise his role as the legendary assassin in a prequel exploring one of the franchise’s most significant chapters.
The film will revisit the events leading up to the first John Wick, focusing on the Impossible Task that the assassin must complete to free himself from his obligations to the High Table and secure a future with his wife, Helen.
Shannon Tindle (Ultraman: Rising, Kubo and the Two Strings) will direct the feature from a screenplay by Ryan and Kaz Firpo. The project is being produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road, Chad Stahelski for 87Eleven Entertainment, Reeves and Point Grey. Nathan Kahane will serve as an executive producer.
The animated film has been in development since its announcement at CinemaCon in 2025. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer recently confirmed that the project had entered pre-production, following the studio’s decision to move forward with the feature.
