Netflix Re-Teams with ‘Wednesday’ Creators for New Adult Animated Series ‘Grim’

Netflix is teaming up with Al Gough and Miles Millar, the creators and executive producers of the smash-hit series “Wednesday,” to bring the supernatural world of Grim to life. The upcoming adult animated series, based on Boom! Studios’ horror-fantasy comic books by Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano, marks an exciting addition to the growing roster of adult animation.

For those unfamiliar with the comic, Grim centers on Jessica Harrow, a newly recruited Reaper who has no memory of her life – or death – before joining the afterlife’s ranks. Unlike her fellow Reapers, Jessica’s quest for identity and purpose pulls her deeper into the hidden realms of the afterlife, uncovering forces and secrets that could unravel everything she thought she knew. But as her search intensifies, she discovers that her connection to Death is far more personal – and far more dangerous – than she ever imagined.

Gough and Millar, who made their mark with the “Wednesday” series, which became Netflix’s No. 1 most-watched English-language show (and No. 4 globally), are set to executive produce “Grim” alongside Jennifer Yuh Nelson, Supervising Director of Netflix’s acclaimed series “Love, Death + Robots.” Nelson, a pioneer in animated storytelling, has an illustrious career, having directed the Kung Fu Panda trilogy, with Kung Fu Panda 2 earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

The “Grim” series is set to carry forward the rich, genre-blending mythology and visual style that first made the comic series a hit when it debuted in 2022. Its 25-issue run concludes this month, and it has already been praised for its fresh take on horror and fantasy, pushing the boundaries of both genres.

Gough and Millar bring with them a wealth of experience, from hits like Smallville, Into the Badlands, and Spider-Man 2, to the cult favorites Shanghai Noon and Beetlejuice. With Grim, Boom! Studios continues its strong track record of adapting compelling comic book stories to the screen, following the success of projects like Butterfly (Amazon Prime Video).
