Maika Monroe Confirms ‘Exceptional’ Script for It Follows Sequel as Filming Rumoured for Next Year

Nearly a decade after the release of It Follows, the cult horror film that redefined the genre in 2014, lead actress Maika Monroe has provided an encouraging update about the long-anticipated sequel, They Follow. Speaking to Decider, Monroe revealed that writer-director David Robert Mitchell has completed a new script she describes as “exceptional,” and production could begin as early as next year—schedule permitting.

“I’m hoping – rumours are of next year,” Monroe said, while acknowledging the complexities of coordinating the cast and crew. “I don’t need to get into a bunch of scheduling and stuff, but we’ve all been busy.”

Monroe’s enthusiasm for the project was clear. “But this script is so good. I absolutely think this movie should get made, because I think fans will be really happy. I think it’s exceptional. We’ll see. Fingers crossed!”

It Follows earned widespread acclaim upon release for its atmospheric tension and original premise, following Monroe’s character Jamie ‘Jay’ Height as she is relentlessly pursued by a supernatural entity passed through intimate contact. Critics praised its “masterfully unsettling” mood (The New York Times) and “a fresh, clever twist on the horror genre” (Variety). The film holds a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is widely regarded as a modern horror classic that reinvigorated indie fright cinema.

Rumours of a sequel have circulated since 2015, when Radius-TWC co-president Tom Quinn first hinted at a follow-up. Official confirmation came in October 2023, when it was announced that Monroe and Mitchell would reunite under the banners of Neon and Good Fear Content.

Monroe can currently be seen starring alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, “Fargo”) in Michelle Garza Cervera‘s (Huesera: The Bone Woman) reimagining of the 1992 psychological thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.
