Sony Pictures’ highly anticipated shark thriller, formerly known as Beneath the Storm, has undergone a title change and a major shift in its release date. Now called Shiver, the film will make a splash in theaters on July 3, 2026, just in time for the Independence Day weekend—a prime spot for summer blockbusters.
Directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, Violent Night), Shiver stars Phoebe Dynevor, known for her breakout role in Bridgerton, alongside Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou.
While plot details are still tightly under wraps, the official synopsis reads, “In the midst of a raging hurricane, a coastal community fights for survival as they are besieged not only by the destructive forces of nature but also by the relentless threat of sharks. Struggling against the pounding rain, debris-strewn streets, and enveloping darkness, they must band together to fend off these deadly predators if they have any hope of making it through the storm alive.”
The shift to a 2026 release brings the film head-to-head with the next installment of the hugely popular Minions franchise, set to open on July 1, 2026.
Originally scheduled for an August 1, 2025, release, this delay allows the film to swim into a summer season reminiscent of classic shark films—specifically, the legendary Jaws, which famously terrorized audiences during the same holiday weekend decades ago.
Shiver is produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick under their Hyperobject Industries banner, alongside Wirkola. Executive producer duties are handled by D. Scott Lumpkin.
