Sophie Nélisse Interview: ‘IRENA’S VOW’ Serves as a Poignant And Timely Lesson In Today’s Fractured World

Louise Archambault’s (And The Birds Rained Down) period drama Irena’s Vow; based on the true story of Irena Gut Opdyke, a young Polish woman who risked her life to save others in one of humanity’s darkest hours, will receive a nationwide release this coming April 15th and April 16th, 2024.

Directed by Archambault, from a screenplay penned by Dan Gordon (Murder in the First, Wyatt Earp), this remarkable true story stars Sophie Nélisse (“Yellowjackets,” 47 Meters Down: Uncaged), Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible 2, “Batwoman”), Andrzej Seweryn, and Maciek Nawrocki.

The film follows 19-year-old Gut who is promoted to housekeeper in the home of a highly respected Nazi officer when she finds out that the Jewish ghetto is about to be liquidated. Horrified by the Nazis’ escalating atrocities, she bravely shelters them in the safest place she can think of: the basement of the German commandant’s house. For over two years, Opdyke lived in constant danger, hiding refugees right under the noses of the oppressors seeking to destroy them. With keen ingenuity and nerves of steel, she kept her secret safe through endless close calls and run-ins with the Nazis she served, somehow managing to avoid exposure while orchestrating the survival and escape of the people relying on her.

In anticipation of the film’s upcoming release, CinemaChords’ Howard Gorman interviewed the star, Nélisse, who discussed her preparation for such a challenging role based on an incredible true story. She also shared insights on filming near the real locations and her hopes that audiences will connect with the movie’s relevant themes.
