Trailer for Michael Showalter’s Psychological Thriller ‘Verity’ Straddles the Line Between Truth and Fiction

Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway in Verity Trailer

Amazon MGM Studios has debuted the trailer for Michael Showalter’s (The Idea of You, The Big Sick) psychological thriller Verity, ahead of its October 2, 2026 theatrical release.

Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s 2018 bestselling eponymous novel, Verity follows author Verity Crawford (Anne HathawayMother Mary, Interstellar) and writer Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota JohnsonSuspiria, Fifty Shades of Grey), who is hired to ghostwrite for Crawford after moving to the remote Crawford estate. While working at the property, Lowen discovers a set of autobiographical notes attributed to Verity that contain disturbing accounts involving her husband Jeremy (Josh HartnettOppenheimer, 30 Days of Night). As she continues reviewing the material, Lowen becomes increasingly uncertain about the line between fiction and reality, manipulation and attraction, and opportunity and obsession.

The novel was originally self-published on December 7, 2018, and later republished by Grand Central Publishing in 2021 following a surge in popularity. It won the LovelyBooks Leserpreis for Romance in 2020 and the British Book Award for Pageturner in 2023.

The film is directed by Showalter from a screenplay by Nick Antosca (Antlers, “Channel Zero”, the upcoming “Cape Fear” series). It is produced by Nick Antosca, Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher, Michael Showalter, Jordana Mollick, Anne Hathaway, and Colleen Hoover. Executive producers include Kerry Orent, Dakota Johnson, and Lauren Levine.

The ensemble cast also includes Ismael Cruz Córdova (“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”), and Brady Wagner (Liz Here Now).

Verity is produced by Eat the Cat, Semi-Formal Productions, Shiny Penny, Somewhere Pictures, and Heartbones Production.
