‘You’re Dating a Narcissist’ Star Sherry Cola Talks Red-Flag Projection Paradox and Remaining Open to the Joy of Letting Love In

Sherry Cola You're Dating a Narcissist

You’re Dating a Narcissist, the feature debut from director Ann Marie Allison, is a rom-com that juggles laughs and heartbreak, with a wry take on how easily “red flags” can become an all-consuming obsession if we’re not careful. The film releases in theaters March 27 via Brainstorm Media.

Allison, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jenna Milly, also produces alongside Jorge Garcia Castro, Chris Abernathy, and Eric Fleishman.

Heading up the stellar ensemble cast is Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home), who’s joined by Sherry Cola (Joyride, “Shrinking”), Ciara Bravo (Cherry), Marco Pigossi (Bone Lake, “Gen V”), and José María Yazpik (The Burning Plain, Madame Web).

The film centers on Judy, a sharp-witted psychology professor specializing in identifying narcissists’ red flags, who is more than taken aback when her daughter unexpectedly announces her engagement to a man she’s just met. Hell-bent on proving that he’s the type of person she warns people to avoid like the plague, Judy flies across the country, only to find herself torn between protecting her daughter’s heart and facing the possibility that maybe she’s seeing red flags that aren’t really there.

To mark the film’s release, CinemaChords sat down with Sherry Cola, who shared how the film aims to make audiences laugh at the madness rather than be overwhelmed by it, her approach to playing both comic relief and the emotional counterpart to Marisa Tomei’s character, and why the story might ultimately inspire viewers to take a few more emotional leaps of faith.
