Point Break Casting. Matias Varela to Play Grommet

Only yesterday we reported that Alcon Entertainment were in search of a replacement for Bodhi in the upcoming Point Break remake as Gerard Butler has had to pull out due to schedule conflicts.

No doubt we’ll be hearing who has been cast for that role sooner rather than later as the producers are adamant to keep to their original schedule. However, Swedish actor Matias Varela has now been tapped for the film taking on the role of Grommet, an extreme sports athlete and member of Bodhi’s band of outlaws.

Varela’s first major role was as Swedish-Chilean drug dealer Joge Salinas in the Swedish crime film, Snabba Cash (Easy Money). This film went on to become a huge success, spawning two sequels which Varela also starred in. He then made the move to Hollywood productions first in an episode of ‘Covert Affairs’ before later being cast in a recurring role as Ferdinand II of Naples in ‘The Borgias.’

In terms of plot details, the remake, helmed by Eriscon Core (Invincible) and written by Kurt Wimmer (Total Recall remake) is reported to stick fairly close to the basic premise of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 original whilst adding a few new twists and settings. This time round, rather than following surfing aficionados, the characters will practice all manner of international extreme sports.

And if that rush wasn’t enough for you, Alcon Entertainment has also secured the rights to create a Point Break television series and video game.
