New Trailer for J.A. Bayona’s ‘SOCIETY OF THE SNOW’ Based on a Remarkable True Story of Human Resilience

Netflix has today released a new teaser trailer for J.A. Bayona‘s (The Impossible, A Monster Calls) survival thriller Society of the Snow, which has been selected by Spain as its official entry for the Best International Film category at The 2024 Academy Awards®.

Directed by Bayona, from a script he wrote with Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and  Nicolás Casariego, and based on the eponymous book by Pablo Vierci which documented accounts of all 16 survivors of the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster, many of whom Vierci knew from childhood.

Bayona first discovered Vierci’s book while researching for The Impossible, and bought the rights for the book at the end of shooting that film.

Society of the Snow takes place in 1972, when Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they have to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

The film stars Enzo Vogrincic (Numa Turcatti), Agustín Pardella (Nando Parrado), Matías Recalt (Roberto Canessa), Esteban Bigliardi (Javier Methol), Diego Vegezzi (Marcelo Perez), Fernando Contigiani García (Arturo Nogueira), Esteban Kukuriczka (Fito Strauch), Rafael Federman (Eduardo Strauss), Francisco Romero (Daniel Fernandez Strauch), Valentino Alonso (Pancho Delgado), Tomás Wolf (Gustavo Zerbino), Agustín Della Corte (Tintín Vizintín), Felipe Otaño (Carlitos Páez), Andy Pruss (Roy Harley), Blas Polidori (Coco), Felipe Ramusio (Diego Storm), and Simón Hempe (Coche Inciarte).

After winning the Audience Award At San Sebastián Film Festival, the film also took home The Audience Favourite Award For Narrative in the ¡Viva El Cine! Section at Mill Valley Film Festival.

Society of the Snow will release in select cinemas in December before debuting on Netflix on 4 January, 2024.
