Michael Giacchino Revisits a Decade of Film Scores with Retro-Inspired New Album

Michael Giacchino — the sonic architect behind some of Hollywood’s most unforgettable scores — is back with a new twist on the classics. His upcoming release, Exotic Themes for the Silver Screen – Volume 2, drops via boutique label Mutant and sees the celebrated composer reimagining a decade’s worth of film music through the velvet-filtered lens of vintage 1950s lounge exotica.

Following the success of Volume 1, this second installment dives into Giacchino’s 2012–2022 catalog, offering up smooth reinterpretations of themes from Inside Out, Coco, Doctor Strange, and Jurassic World.

Limited edition color wax and a retro-styled CD are up for pre-order starting today at 12pm CT — with packaging that leans hard into the kitsch. The releases comes with artwork by Luke Insect and liner notes from Charles Phoenix.

Volume 2 also includes a spellbinding suite from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, a sultry rework of Jyn Erso’s Theme from Rogue One, and dreamy reinterpretations of cues from War for the Planet of the Apes, Tomorrowland, and even Giacchino’s own directorial debut, Werewolf By Night.

“We are thrilled to continue exploring Michael’s storied career with this incredible collection of some of his most beloved themes reworked for warm summer nights with a cocktail (or mocktail) in hand,” says Mutant co-founder Spencer Hickman. “Michael is a rare composer that is comfortable with superheroes, horror, action, or intimate drama. He always manages to create incredibly beautiful earworms that have been further highlighted by these stripped-back downtempo versions of his award-winning themes.”

To celebrate the release, Giacchino will take the stage for a one-night-only live performance at San Diego’s Epstein Family Amphitheater on July 22. The show will spotlight tracks from both volumes of the series and promises to be an immersive, ultra-chic affair. Fans attending can snag an exclusive 300-copy variant of the vinyl, which comes bundled with a mysterious bonus 7-inch that hasn’t yet been revealed.

Tickets for the concert are on sale now via artpower.ucsd.edu.
