“Green and Gold”: A Heartwarming Tale of Family, Football, and the Fight for Legacy

Get ready for a cinematic journey that’s equal parts grit, heart, and hometown pride. Green and Gold, a poignant new film set to hit theatres nationwide on January 31, 2025, brings the timeless story of family farming and community spirit to the big screen—starring the legendary Craig T. Nelson (“Young Sheldon”, “Coach”) alongside a talented cast that includes Brandon Sklenar (It Ends with Us, “1923: A Yellowstone Origin Story”), Annabel Armour (Contagion), Madison Lawlor (Juniper, Close Range), and the late, great M. Emmet Walsh (Knives Out, Blade Runner) in his final performance.

Directed by Anders Lindwall, Green and Gold tells the story of Buck (Nelson), a fourth-generation dairy farmer in Wisconsin, whose farm—along with his family’s legacy—is threatened by foreclosure. With mounting debts and the looming prospect of losing the land his ancestors worked for generations, Buck is determined to fight for his legacy, no matter what it takes. But as the clock runs out, Buck places a high-stakes Super Bowl bet on his beloved Green Bay Packers—risking everything in a desperate attempt to save the family farm.

At its heart, Green and Gold is more than just a story about a man trying to save his farm. It’s a tribute to the resilience of small-town America, a celebration of the hardworking individuals who tend to the land, and a nod to the spirit of community that runs deep in Wisconsin. Set against the backdrop of the 1990s, the film beautifully weaves together the themes of family, sacrifice, and the pursuit of dreams.

While Buck fights to preserve the family farm, his granddaughter (Lawlor) has her own dreams—of a career in music. Her friendship with a rising rock star (Sklenar) tempts her to leave the farm behind, creating a powerful family dynamic as both generations wrestle with what it means to build a legacy.

“The story really resonated with me personally,” Nelson said of his role. “The Nelson family farm has been working the land in South Dakota since the Civil War, and my wife’s family were also farmers. Green and Gold captures the tenacity of small-town farmers, and the strength of family and community. I was honored to play Buck and to highlight the dreams that define so many lives in America’s heartland.”

For Lindwall, the project hits close to home, too. “Growing up just north of Green Bay as the grandson of a dairy farmer and die-hard Packers fans, my brother Davin and I poured our hearts into this film. It’s our tribute to small-town communities and the values they stand for,” he said.

The film is also a love letter to Wisconsin itself, from the scenic farmlands to the passionate Packers fans. The film is presented in collaboration with Culver’s—whose roots in small-town Wisconsin run deep—and the Green Bay Packers, known for their unique status as the nation’s only community-owned professional football team, in a first-of-its-kind collaboration, adding a layer of authenticity to the story. Packers director of corporate partnership sales & activations, Justin Wolf, said, “Green and Gold portrays the story of Packers fans’ devotion to legacy and community—it is a must-see. We are proud to be part of a story celebrating supporting one another and showcasing the critical role that family farms play across our great state of Wisconsin and beyond.”

CEO Ray Nutt of Fathom Events also added, “Fathom is thrilled to bring Green and Gold to theatres nationwide. Audiences will soon discover how beautifully this film captures the drive in all of us to hold onto our dreams.”

Green and Gold has already taken home various awards, including being named an Official Selection and Audience Award Winner at the 2024 Austin Film Festival, as well as an Official Selection and Audience Choice at the Heartland Film Festival.

Nelson will also be singing the National Anthem at the Packers’ game vs. the Bears on January 5th in support of the film.

Don’t miss this heartwarming story of dreams, family, and the unbreakable spirit of a community—screening in over 1,000 theaters nationwide through Fathom Events on January 31, 2025. Whether you’re a Packers fan, a lover of family dramas, or simply someone who believes in the power of perseverance, Green and Gold is sure to leave a lasting impression.
