Lionsgate has today debuted the first official trailer for Tim Mielants‘ (“Peaky Blinders”, “The Responder”) feature film adaptation of Claire Keegan’s award-winning historical fiction novel, “Small Things Like These.” The novel won the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
Directed by Mielants, from a screenplay penned by Enda Walsh, the film stars Oscar® winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, “Peaky Blinders”) as devoted father Bill Furlong. While working As a coal merchant struggling to support his family, the protagonist uncovers disturbing secrets within the local convent and unsettling truths about his own past. Compelled to confront these revelations, he faces the complicit silence of a small Irish town controlled by the Catholic Church.
The film received its world premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival last February with The Guardian describing it as an “absorbing, committed drama”, whilst The Telegraph‘s review painted an even more evocative picture, describing it as “a tight-lipped Irish drama even more suffused with sadness than the log-line implies, and shouldered with hypnotic grace by a very special Cillian Murphy”.
Starring alongside Murphy are Eileen Walsh (The Magdalene Sisters, Nicholas Nickleby), Michelle Fairley (“Game of Thrones”, “Gangs of London”), Clare Dunne (The Last Duel, Spider-Man: Far from Home), Helen Behan (“The Virtues”, “Malpractice”), and Emily Watson (God’s Creatures, “Chernobyl”). The film is produced by Alan Moloney, Cillian Murphy, Catherine Magee, Matt Damon, and Drew Vinton with Ben Affleck, Michael Joe, Kevin Halloran, and Niamh Fagan serving as executive producers.
Small Things Like These will release in theaters in the UK & Ireland on November 1, 2024 and in theaters in the U.S. on November 8, 2024.
