Through a relentless schedule of sweaty, frantic gigs in basement venues, raucous house parties, and coveted slots at some of the most in-demand club nights, Hungry has quickly become one of Manchester’s most exciting live bands. They return today with their latest single, a pulsing, high-energy track that points the way towards the band’s eagerly anticipated debut EP, Are You The Best Yet?
Building on the band’s previous acclaimed singles “The Jig” (featured on BBC Radio 1’s Future Artists) and “On Sight” (played on Radio X to widespread critical acclaim), the band’s new single carves out a socially conscious sound. With positive vibes, energetic instrumentation, and incisive, character-driven lyrics, this latest offering captures the shape of societal change.
For “Sick Of It,” frontman Jacob Peck came up with a two-part narrative. The first half explores the poignant loss of ambition and surrender to the relentless grind of rat race, told through the eyes of a fictional character, whilst the song’s second half shifts to reflect Peck’s own experiences, as well as the band’s collective vision of an ideal future.
Peck elaborates: “This tune is short, snappy, and does what it says on the tin in under three minutes. Exactly how it should be. The character of in the first part of the song is a cog on the up and up through the rat race, where childlike wonderment has given way to an endless, adult nine-to-five existence. When we switch out of the character at the bridge, it’s more about us, our ambitions and ethics.”
“We’re sick of structural career progression, capital gain, and physical symbols of success as they pull us away from our passions and personal ethics. But music gives us hope of creating a more meaningful life.”
