‘You’re Dating a Narcissist’ Interview: Ann Marie Allison on Red Flags and Self-Protection vs. Self-Sabotage

Ann Marie Allison behind the scenes of You're Dating a Narcissist

Leading an ensemble headed by Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, Spider-Man: Homecoming), the satirical romcom, You’re Dating a Narcissist, brings together a cast that includes Sherry Cola (Joyride, “Shrinking”), Ciara Bravo (Cherry), Marco Pigossi (Bone Lake, “Gen V”), and José María Yazpik (The Burning Plain, Madame Web).

The film marks the feature debut of co-writer-director Ann Marie Allison and is all set to release in theaters this Friday, March 27.

Co-written by Allison and Jenna Milly, the film is produced by Allison alongside Jorge Garcia Castro, Chris Abernathy, and Eric Fleishman.

Blending pointed humor with emotional vulnerability, the story takes a wry look at how easily the search for “red flags” can begin to spiral. At the center of the film is Judy (Tomei), a sharp-tongued psychology professor obsessed with identifying narcissists, who’s shocked to discover that her daughter (Bravo) plans to marry a man (Pigossi) she’s only just met. Deadset on exposing him as the narcissist she believes him to be, Judy travels across the country, only to find herself caught between protecting her daughter and reckoning with the possibility that maybe her red-flag-obsessed instincts are leading her astray.

To mark the film’s release, CinemaChords sat down with Ann Marie Allison to discuss creating a story that encourages audiences to “laugh at the madness rather than be overwhelmed by it,” how she balanced cutting comedy with emotional honesty, and why the film ultimately invites viewers to reflect on the fine line between self-protection and self-sabotage when it comes to matters of the heart.
