The Housemaid’s Secret: Lionsgate Eyes 2026 Start for Sequel with Sweeney and Morrone in Talks to Return

After the strong box office performance of The Housemaid, Lionsgate is preparing to bring Freida McFadden’s next thriller to the screen. The Housemaid’s Secret, the second book in McFadden’s bestselling trilogy, is set to begin production in 2026.

Sydney Sweeney is expected to return as Millie, reprising her role and stepping into an executive producer capacity, with Michele Morrone likely to reprise his role as the mysterious estate groundskeeper, Enzo. Paul Feig is slated to direct again, with Rebecca Sonnenshine adapting the screenplay from McFadden’s 2023 follow-up novel.

The first film, based on McFadden’s 2022 page-turner, has made a huge impact at the box office, grossing over $75 million domestically in its first 17 days and $133 million worldwide. Weaving suspense and psychological intrigue through a world where perfection is an illusion, The Housemaid centers on Millie who takes a position as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina (Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar), only to discover that the glittering façade conceals a treacherous, seductive game of secrets and power.

The Housemaid’s Secret picks up Millie’s story where the first film left off, this time placing her in a new household where she navigates the next stage of her career — and, of course, her survival.

The Housemaid series has sold over 12 million copies worldwide, with The Housemaid’s Secret alone accounting for four million. Translated into 40 languages, the books have spent over 65 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and earned the 2023 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Thriller. With the third installment, The Housemaid Is Watching, published in 2024, a further cinematic chapter could be on the horizon should the sequel replicate the success of its predecessor.
