FX Orders ‘Far Cry’ Video Game Adaptation Anthology TV Series from Noah Hawley and Rob McElhenney

FX is turning the wild, lawless world of the Far Cry games into a TV series, with “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” co-creator Rob McElhenney at the helm. McElhenney will also star, with the show set to stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.

The Far Cry games have long been defined not by a continuous storyline but by their thematic throughline: placing players in expansive wildernesses where survival depends on outmaneuvering ruthless local despots and navigating untamed environments. Staying true to this approach, the forthcoming FX series will embrace a seasonal anthology structure. Each installment will introduce a new location and a fresh ensemble, offering self-contained stories while preserving the franchise’s signature tension and unpredictability.

Hawley highlighted the creative alignment between the game series and his own work: “What I love about Far Cry is that it’s inherently an anthology. Each game is a thematic variation, much like how each season of “Fargo” explores similar ideas in a new story. The opportunity to create a high-octane show that evolves year to year, while delving into humanity through a chaotic lens, is thrilling. Partnering with Rob to bring our shared sensibility to this world feels like a natural fit.”

McElhenney, who also produces the Emmy-winning “Welcome to Wrexham” through his More Better Productions, is on board as both star and executive producer. Hawley will produce via his 26 Keys banner, following his new overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television.

Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, praised the collaboration: “FX has had extraordinary partnerships with Rob and Noah across six series and 32 seasons of television. We’re confident their vision for “Far Cry” will be original, gripping, and thoroughly entertaining. We are grateful to Ubisoft for trusting us with this beloved property.”

McElhenney reflected on the opportunity, noting Ubisoft’s support: “Working with Noah Hawley is a dream realized. Ubisoft has been incredibly generous in allowing us to inhabit one of the most iconic video-game universes ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with unwavering support.”

The Far Cry franchise has been a commercial powerhouse. By 2014, it had sold over 20 million units worldwide, and by 2019, cumulative sales reached 50 million. While previous adaptations included Uwe Boll’s 2008 direct-to-video film starring Til Schweiger and the 2012 web series “The Far Cry Experience,” Hawley and McElhenney’s series promises a fresh, expansive take tailored for television.

Executive producers on the project include McElhenney, Hawley, Emilia Serrano (26 Keys), Nick Frenkel (3 Arts), Jackie Cohn (More Better Productions), John Campisi, Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill (Ubisoft Film & Television), with FX Productions handling production.
