‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ Trailer Offers First Look at Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe Thriller

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, the 1992 psychological thriller that once haunted VHS shelves, is back in a new version from 20th Century Studios. The first trailer for the reboot has just landed online, offering a glimpse of this fresh new take.

Directed by Michelle Garza Cervera (Huesera: The Bone Woman), this reimagining stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, “Fargo”) as Caitlin Morales, a suburban mother whose home life is disrupted by the arrival of a new nanny, Polly Murphy (Maika MonroeIt Follows, Longlegs).

Backed by a script from Micah Bloomberg (Sanctuary, “Homecoming”), based on Amanda Silver‘s original screenplay, the film is produced by Michael Schaefer, Mike LaRocca, and Ted Field, who also produced the original The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. The supporting cast includes Raúl Castillo, Martin Starr, Mileiah Vega, Riki Lindhome, and Shannon Cochran.

Though The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is a remake of the 1992 film – originally starring Annabella Sciorra, Matt McCoy, and Rebecca De Mornay as the nanny – director Garza Cervera stresses that this update is far from a carbon copy. Speaking ahead of the release, Garza Cervera promises the film contains plenty of “shocking moments,” hinting at a fresh approach to the story.

“The studio gave me all the chances to recreate the whole thing and build a new story, new characters, with its own heart. I think that was the best way to honor the original, not try to redo it,” she adds. “We build a whole different kind of thriller. It’s actually more of a slow burn.”

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle premieres October 22, exclusively on Hulu.
