‘The Housemaid’ Trailer: Paul Feig Trades Comedy for Class Anxiety in new Thriller Starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried

Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, A Simple Favor), a director most commonly associated with female-led studio comedies such as Spy and Bridesmaids, takes a stylistic pivot with The Housemaid, trading lighthearted capers for psychological suspense. Set for release on 19 December, the film stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried in a tightly drawn study of duplicity, control, and domestic unease.

Adapted from Freida McFadden’s bestselling 2019 novel, the story follows Millie (Sweeney), a young woman attempting to escape a murky past by taking a job as a live-in housemaid for the affluent Winchester family. Seyfried plays Nina Winchester, whose seemingly perfect life quickly begins to unravel as Millie becomes entangled in the family’s secrets. Brandon Sklenar co-stars as Andrew Winchester.

Curiously, McFadden initially set the source material aside, feeling it was “a little too dark” compared to her earlier work. But then UK digital publisher Bookouture came knocking, interested in promoting one of her books, and The Housemaid quickly found a wide audience, spawning two sequels: The Housemaid’s Secret in 2023, followed by The Housemaid Is Watching, released in June 2024.

The script was adapted by Rebecca Sonnenshine (“The Boys”, “The Vampire Diaries”) and the film’s score comes courtesy of Theodore Shapiro, marking his seventh collaboration with Feig.

The Housemaid releases exclusively in theaters December 19, 2025.
