After a 14-year hiatus, Final Destination: Bloodlines breathes thrilling new life into the long-running franchise, delivering what is by far its most fun, self-aware, inventive, and unexpectedly poignant entry yet.
This latest chapter centers on Stefanie (Kaitlyn Santa Juana), a college student tormented by recurring nightmares of a tragic accident she feels inexplicably connected to. Convinced these visions are more than just dreams, Stefanie is drawn into a race against time to uncover a buried family secret—and find the one person who may hold the key to ending Death’s vicious cycle once and for all.
As always, the series delivers on the mayhem, and Bloodlines might just boast some of the most gruesome and creatively staged kills yet. The set pieces are masterclasses in suspense, misdirection, and devilishly devious fun. And the opening disaster is an instant franchise highlight: a jaw-dropping, nerve-shredding sequence that rivals the iconic highway pile-up from Final Destination 2 (this reviewer’s all-time favorite). It’s a masterclass in tension and surprise, setting a relentless tone and lacing the chaos with sharp, unexpected turns.
Kaitlyn Santa Juana is a revelation, anchoring the chaos with a perfect performance, whilst the supporting cast is equally strong; especially Richard Harmon, who steals every scene he’s in, delivering many of the film’s funniest and most delightfully self-aware moments.
Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein handle the material with a confident hand, orchestrating elaborate set pieces that are just as suspenseful as they are inventive. Every scene really feels like a loaded mousetrap, and the fun comes from trying to guess which piece of the deadly environment will spring next. The result is a constant blend of tension, excitement, squirm-worthy anticipation, and unexpected laughs.
But beyond the spectacle, Bloodlines lands a real emotional punch with the return of Tony Todd in what is reportedly his final role. His appearance brings a weight and poignancy that lingers, a fitting farewell to a figure who has loomed so memorably over the franchise from the beginning.
Final Destination: Bloodlines is a fierce reminder that this franchise still has plenty of life – and death – left in it, and this reviewer enjoyed every single second of it. Let’s just hope Death doesn’t wait another decade and a half to come calling again. Because if Bloodlines proves anything, it’s that there’s still plenty of blood pumping through the franchise’s veins.
