Ari Aster’s ‘Eddington’ Teaser Drops: Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal Face Off in Tense Western Dramedy

A24 has just dropped the official teaser trailer for Eddington, the upcoming contemporary Western black comedy directed by Ari Aster (Midsommar, Hereditary). Set to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix (Joker, Gladiator) as a small-town sheriff and Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us,” Gladiator II) as the mayor of Eddington, New Mexico.

The story, which unfolds in May 2020, revolves around a tense standoff between the sheriff and the mayor that rapidly escalates, igniting conflict among the town’s residents as neighbors are pitted against each other.

Alongside Phoenix and Pascal, the film features a strong, extensive ensemble cast, including Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone.

Interestingly, Eddington was initially envisioned by Ari Aster as his directorial debut. However, after several years of attempts to bring the project to life, he ultimately chose to pursue Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019) first. Fast forward to today, and as the poster reminds us, hindsight is 20/20. Time has proven to be kind to Aster, allowing him to refine his original vision for Eddington, which is now on the verge of release.

Eddington is slated for a theatrical release on July 18, 2025. As anticipation builds for its Cannes premiere, all eyes will be on how Aster merges his signature psychological storytelling with the Western genre.
