Dutch Mustard Drops ‘Dreaming’: A Reflection on Love and Vulnerability Ahead of US Debut Shows

Dutch Mustard, the alt-rock project of Netherlands born Sarah-Jayne Riedel (AKA SJ), has just dropped her latest single, Dreaming, via DM Records. The track, which builds on her already impressive reputation as a songwriter and producer, marks a new chapter in SJ’s musical journey, blending hazy sonics with deeply personal emotion.

In her own words, Dreaming captures “that strange grey area at the start of a relationship—when you’re unsure if it’s real or just a dream. It’s about a rare, true connection and the vulnerability of opening yourself up, letting someone in, and wondering if they’ll meet you in the same world.” This exploration of the complexities of human connection shines through in the song’s ethereal soundscape, where the line between reality and fantasy feels beautifully blurred.

SJ’s commitment to growth as an artist is evident in the evolution of her music. Having received guidance on previous releases from industry heavyweights like Bill Ryder-Jones, Dave Sitek, and Antony Genn, her drive for self-improvement continues to fuel her creative process. This hunger for development has led her to hone her craft at the studio where she works, refining each track to perfection. As a result, Dreaming offers a precise, modern take on shoegaze, steering clear of the grungy aesthetic often associated with the genre, and instead presenting something more nuanced and artful.

Dreaming drops just as Dutch Mustard prepares for her debut US shows. Over the coming days, SJ will be performing at New York’s New Colossus Festival, a cult showcase known for spotlighting emerging talent.

The single also marks the beginning of an exciting year ahead for Dutch Mustard, with more releases and a UK tour planned.
