‘NOTEWORTHY’ INTERVIEW: The Beautiful Game Celebrate Release of Sophomore Album ‘Common Royalty’

Brace yourself, because the wait is finally over – London alt-rockers The Beautiful Game have returned with their highly anticipated sophomore album, Common Royalty, following the success of their 2017 debut Line The Streets. The five-piece, made up of Jason Crowley (vocals), Lawrence Bonavia (guitar), Steven Foxley (guitar), Paul Jeffrey (bass), and Katie Padfield (drums), have stayed true to their roots while evolving their sound, delivering a fresh, yet distinctly Britpop vibe. With its soaring melodies, blistering guitar riffs, and anthemic choruses, Common Royalty is a tour-de-force that channels the swagger and bravado of legendary acts like The Stone Roses, The Libertines, Oasis, and The Jam, while still sounding utterly fresh and vital.

The band’s signature style of rousing melodies, life-affirming lyrics, and stadium-worthy choruses is on full display, making Common Royalty a thrilling and much-needed return. Singles like the electrifying “Hollywood in Holloway” and the euphoric “Radio” set the stage for what was sure to be a standout album—and it certainly delivered.

To mark the release, CinemaChords’ Howard Gorman caught up with Lawrence and Katie to talk about how the band’s sound has evolved since their debut, how the themes on Common Royalty reflect the changes of the past seven years, and how producer Beau Blaise helped shape the album’s final sound.

The Beautiful Game are back, and they’re bringing their unique brand of British indie fire with them—making this album one you won’t want to miss!

You can listen to Common Royalty in full now on all streaming platforms.
