Colour TV’s Sam Durneen Talks New Single ‘Vanilla’ and Their Dark, Contemplative and Psychedelic Future

Since the release of their maiden single ‘Charlie’ in 2021, Cornwall’s wildly infectious Colour TV have been stirring up some serious buzz, and despite the name of their latest single ‘Vanilla’, the future looks anything but that for them. Very few bands out there are as primed to blow up in a big way as these five guys are right now.

Featuring Sam Durneen (vocals), James Elliott (guitar), Jack Yeo (guitar), Sean Goldsmith (drums) and newly enlisted bassist Chris Harwood, while never shying away from flaunting their musical influences, each new release has seen the band taking one giant musical leap after another to forge a manifestly more mature, beefed-up, and more importantly, singular British sound that seamlessly melds together elements of emo, shoegaze and grunge; a novel combo that provides a breath of fresh air amidst the current wave of British alternative guitar bands.

The band’s sixth single, ‘Vanilla’, is a romp and a riot of soaring vocals and explosive scuzzy guitars, exploring themes of unlearning repression and, as per the press release, “a head-on bark of liberation to a generation sick to death of conformity”.

To coincide with the release of the band’s latest track, CinemaChords’ Howard Gorman caught up with frontman Durneen, who suggested that recent hardships may well have informed the more mature nature of the band’s recent output, and went on to explain their stance on acknowledging their influences while injecting their own contemporary, signature twist. Durneen also reflected on the unexpected appeal of some of the band’s more spartan, stripped-back material; songs that soon became crowd favourite pogo-pop/rock singalongs, and he also hinted at what fans can look forward to from the band in the next phase of their journey, having recently headed back into the studio and itching to debut new material at their forthcoming live shows (tickets available here).
