I’m Dreaming of a Dark Christmas

Silent Night

silent-night-2012-horrorfilm-200x200Considering this is a look at the darker side of Christmas there is only one film which springs to mind starring a not-so-jolly Saint Nick and that is the recent remake of the 1984 slasher film Silent Night, Deadly Night.

Directed by Steven C Miller and starring Jamie King, Malcolm McDowell, Brendan Fehr and Ellen Wong, Silent Night is set in a small American town which is being plagued by a killer Santa Claus. After picking off misbehaving citizens on Christmas Eve it is up to the staff of a small Sheriff’s office to put a stop to the rising bloody count.

What works well is that as a director Miller fully embraces all the tropes of the horror genre and has crafted a lovingly twisted full-on-gore rollercoaster of a film that delivers inventive deaths, a villain worth being scared off and an underlying sense of dark humour.

Miller not only updates a classic slasher film with a festive twist but he has made a film which not only pays homage to the original but it serves well as a stand-alone film and it is for this reason that Silent Night takes our final spot.

There you have it, ten alternative christmas films that you should check out. But if you are looking for more films set in or around the festive season we would like to honorably recommend the following films: The Long Kiss Goodnight, Saint, Wind Chill, Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, Eyes Wide Shut and Children of Men but to name a few.

What do you think of our list? Do you have any other alternative Christmas films that you like to watch? Let us know in the comments section below.
