IFC Films has just released the official trailer for Inheritance, an experimental action thriller directed by Neil Burger (Divergent, Voyagers, Limitless) that promises to deliver an adrenaline-fueled, globe-trotting experience. The film stars Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play, “Bridgerton”) and Rhys Ifans (“House of the Dragon”, The Amazing Spider-Man), with a script co-written by Burger and Olen Steinhauer (All the Old Knives, “Berlin Station”).
Inheritance follows Maya (Dynevor), a young woman who uncovers a shocking family secret: her father was once a spy. As Maya dives deeper into her father’s mysterious past, she quickly becomes entangled in an international conspiracy. Pursued by dangerous forces, she is forced to travel across the world, using her father’s espionage skills to uncover hidden truths and survive the deadly threats targeting her.
The film’s development was inspired by an idea that Burger conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to an unconventional production process. Shot entirely on an iPhone, Inheritance was filmed across four major cities—New York City, Delhi, Seoul, and Cairo. Burger employed an experimental shooting style that eliminated traditional filmmaking delays like makeup checks and rehearsals. “We’d arrive at the location and then immediately shoot as much as we could in the time that we had. It enabled us to travel with a small crew,” Burger explained.
The ensemble cast of Inheritance also includes Ciara Baxendale (“My Mad Fat Diary”), and Kersti Bryan (“Perry Mason”). Produced by Neil Burger, Bill Block, and Charles Miller, Inheritance is set to hit theaters on January 24, 2025, promising to be a fast-paced, gripping thriller that looks to eschew the typical trappings and boundaries of the genre.
