INTERVIEW: Kal Penn on ‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’: The Scandal That Turned a Doctor’s Life Upside Down

Kal Penn Interview - Trust Me I'm A Doctor

What happens when the tabloid headlines define you before you get a chance to tell your own story?

In Thane Economou‘s latest film, Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, Kal Penn plays Dr Sandeep Kapoor, the physician caught up in the scandal surrounding the death of his former patient, model and reality TV star Anna Nicole Smith (Abbie Cornish). Against the backdrop of the early 2000s tabloid frenzy, Kapoor finds his professional and personal life under siege as paparazzi stake out his office, police raid his home and his private journals find their way into the public domain.

Based on Kapoor’s memoir, the film charts his efforts to clear his name as a drug conspiracy trial places his reputation, career and private life under scrutiny. With the tough-as-nails defence attorney Ellyn Garofalo (Linda Hamilton) fighting his corner, Kapoor faces a legal battle in which the distinction between public perception and the facts of the case becomes increasingly difficult to maintain.

Mixing courtroom drama with deadpan comedy, Trust Me, I’m a Doctor takes aim at the circus surrounding celebrity scandal and the lives left in pieces behind it. As the tabloids turn a real person’s private life into public property, the truth risks getting lost in the noise.
