Trailer for ‘Islands’ Teases a Thriller Built on Desire, Mystery, and Disconnection

Greenwich Entertainment has debuted the trailer for Islands, a twisty thriller from director Jan-Ole Gerster (Lara, A Coffee in Berlin).

The film follows Tom (Sam Riley), a tennis coach at a tropical resort whose routine life of lessons by day and nightlife by night is upended when an enigmatic tourist (Stacy Martin) arrives. Tension escalates when her husband (Jack Farthing) disappears, and Tom becomes a person of interest in a missing persons investigation.

Gerster, who co-wrote the screenplay with Blaž Kutin and Lawrie Doran, has described the film as a story about disconnection and the desire for change and closeness. “I’m endlessly fascinated by characters that carry a certain sense of loneliness and forlornness within them,” he said. “They are often passive, if not destructive, characters who subconsciously feel a great longing for change and closeness, as the path to those things is often mysterious and out of reach. It’s this state of being that became the starting point for Islands.”

Gerster frames the resort setting as a space that reflects the film’s central tension. “A place where harsh volcanic landscapes, endless deserts, and the Atlantic Ocean collide with tourist architecture and entertainment culture,” he said, “captures the gap between the urge to change and the difficulty of doing so.”

The cast also includes Fatima Adoum (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows).

Islands is slated for a nationwide theatrical release on 30 January 2026.
