‘American Fiction’ Trailer Confronts Culture’s Obsession with Reducing People to Outrageous Stereotypes

MGM has debuted the first official trailer for Cord Jefferson‘s (screenwriter on “The Good Place,” “Watchmen”) hilarious directorial debut, American Fiction which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes.

Written for the screen and directed by Jefferson, based on Percival Everett‘s 2001 novel ‘Erasure’, the film stars Jeffrey Wright (Asteroid City, The Batman) as Monk, a disgruntled novelist who’s fed up with the establishment cashing in on “black” entertainment that constantly recycles tired and insulting tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pseudonym to write an outlandish “black” book of his own, a book that takes him right to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

The ensemble cast also includes Tracee Ellis Ross (Cold Copy, “Black-ish”), John Ortiz (Ad Astra, The Cloverfield Paradox), Erika Alexander (Get Out, I See You, Leslie Uggams (Nanny, Deadpool), Adam Brody (Shazam!, Ready or Not), Keith David (The Thing, They Live), with Issa Rae (Barbie, “Insecure”) and Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther, Biosphere). The film is produced by Ben LeClair, p.g.a., Nikos Karamigios, p.g.a., Cord Jefferson, p.g.a., Jermaine Johnson, p.g.a. and Exec Produced by Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, Percival Everett, Michael Bowes.

American Fiction will realease in Select Theaters this December 15, before epxanding in December 22.
