‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ Pushed Back to Christmas Release Date

Following Illumination’s decision to pull Nintendo’s Mario from its December 21 release date, Dreamworks Animation has pushed back the release of its upcoming sequel, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, from September 23 to said date.

You will recall that Universal brought families together this past Christmas with Illumination’s Sing 2, which took home $162.6 million and opened in more than 2,000 theaters until early April, representing a major hit for a family film.

Antonio Banderas is returning to voice the notorious leche-loving, swashbuckling, fear-defying Puss in Boots, alongside Salma Hayek, also reprising her role as his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Soft Paws. This time around, the duo will be aided – against their better judgment- by a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén, “What We Do in the Shadows”, “Reacher”)

With Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado serving as director and co-director respectively, The Last Wish picks up just two months after the events of the first film with Puss realizing that his passion for adventure has taken its toll: He has burned through eight of his nine lives, leaving him with only one left. So, in an attempt to restore his nine lives, he sets out on an epic journey to find the mystical Last Wish. Along the way, the trio of heroes will have to stay one step ahead of Goldilocks (Oscar® nominee Florence Pugh, Black Widow) and the Three Bears Crime Family, “Big” Jack Horner (Emmy winner John Mulaney, Big Mouth) and terrifying bounty hunter, The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura, Narcos). The all-star comedic cast also includes Oscar® winner Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone (Black Widow), Samson Kayo (Sliced), Emmy nominee Anthony Mendez (Jane the Virgin) and Tony nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Trolls World Tour).

Talks of a follow-up go as far back as 2014 with a sequel confirmed, originally going by the title of Puss in Boots: Nine Lives and Forty Thieves. However, after an initial one-month delay in the film’s release, the project was ultimately removed from the schedule due to restructuring at DreamWorks. Now, some eight years later, The Last Wish is slated for December 21, 2022, and we’ll leave you with the first official trailer featuring Perro, Kitty, and Puss in cahoots together.
