Kino Lorber’s new coming-of-age film Lost Soulz, releasing widely in theaters on May 3rd, marks the impressive feature debut of award-winning director Katherine Propper.
Written and directed by Propper, and starring Sauve Sidle, Micro TDH, Krystall Poppin, Siyanda “Yung Bambi” Stillwell, Malachi Mabson, Aaron “Seven” Melloul , Tauran “Big 40 Thrax” Ambroise, Alex Brackney, the film follows aspiring rapper Sol (Sauve Sidle) as he joins a group of Gen-Z musicians on tour across the heart of Texas, embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime road trip. Set to a laid-back, genre-blending hip-hop soundtrack, Propper’s film captures an infectious energy through its hazy aesthetic. From tour van jam sessions to onstage performances, the ensemble’s winning chemistry shines through their virtuosic musicality.
“I wrote a script that was inspired by aspects of Sauve’s life experience being a young rapper and going on tour,” says Propper. “It’s a story about grappling with shame and overcoming hardships while pursuing one’s dreams. It’s a story about lost souls who are like a family and pursue radical creative expression. It’s a heartfelt collaboration I shared with an amazing group of musicians who were willing to be vulnerable and excited to play characters on-screen similar to themselves. It’s set in Texas, and I hope the film will have a glimpse of transcendence.”
Katherine Propper’s short film Birds earned prestigious honors such as the AFI Grand Jury Prize and SXSW Jury Award for Vision whilst Lost Soulz premiered at last year’s Tribeca Festival where it earned the second-place Audience Award.
