‘When Youth Fades Away’: Somebody’s Child’s New Album Marks Sonic Evolution, Exploring the Old With ‘Fresh Eyes’

Dublin-via-London’s Somebody’s Child have dropped their highly anticipated sophomore album, When Youth Fades Away, a sonic evolution produced by Grammy-winner Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Frightened Rabbit). The album, a blend of emotive rock and pulsing electronic textures, delves into themes of time, relationships, and the search for meaning, as evidenced in singles like the anthemic “Time of My Life” and the introspective “Irish Goodbye.”

Frontman Cian Godfrey describes the record as a pivotal moment, stating, “’When Youth Fades Away’…marks an important milestone in our creative journey…a reminder to seek joy at every turn.” He likens the album’s narrative to revisiting familiar places with a newfound perspective, explaining, “It’s like going back to your parents’ house and noticing something you haven’t seen in years, and having a completely different perspective on it now that you’re older. Like the yellowing of a book, it becomes highlighted by time. By recognising this, we are giving value to it.” This reflection on the passage of time permeates the 11-track album, featuring contributions from Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), and sees the band drawing influences from Kraftwerk to Leonard Cohen, pushing beyond indie rock conventions.

To celebrate, Somebody’s Child has embarked on a whirlwind tour, including a slew of sold-out in-store shows:
