‘WATCH THE SKIES’ Trailer: More Than Meets the AI in this Groundbreaking Sci-Fi Adventure?

The upcoming sci-fi adventure Watch the Skies is set to release exclusively at AMC Theatres on May 9th. This film is gaining attention not only for its intriguing storyline but also for its use of AI in the dubbing process. From XYZ Films and Flawless, it claims to be the world’s first full-length theatrical film to implement AI for immersive dubbing, raising some interesting questions about AI’s growing role in filmmaking.

Directed by Crazy Pictures, Watch the Skies follows a rebellious teenager who believes her missing father was abducted by aliens. She teams up with a group of UFO enthusiasts as they embark on a journey that takes them far beyond the law—and beyond Earth. The film stars Inez Dahl Torhaug, Jesper Barkselius, Sara Shirpey, Eva Melander, and others.

Flawless has developed AI technology to enhance the film’s dubbing process. Their “vubbing” technology synchronizes lip movements to English dialogue, despite the original being shot in Swedish. The filmmakers claim this process results in a more natural, immersive experience for viewers. They also emphasize that the English dub was created in collaboration with the original filmmakers and cast, maintaining the authenticity of the performances.

A recently released featurette gives a closer look at how Flawless’ technology works. It highlights the integration of voice actors’ performances into the film, making the English-language version appear seamless. Filmmakers and original actors discuss how the technology helped bring the vision to life for English-speaking audiences. Early test audiences, who were unaware of the film’s Swedish origin, have expressed surprise at how smoothly the dubbing fits with the actors’ lip movements.

Watch the Skies represents a new step in the conversation about AI in filmmaking. While it’s being promoted as a way to enhance accessibility and preserve the integrity of the original performances, it also raises questions about the future role of AI in creative industries. How it will affect traditional filmmaking and voiceover work remains to be seen, but for now, it’s clear that Watch the Skies is pushing the boundaries of AI in film.
