In 2005, Hertfordshire’s The Subways – comprising then-teenagers Billy Lunn, Charlotte Cooper, and Josh Morgan – shot into the limelight with their debut album Young For Eternity. The album quickly went Gold, launching them into a career brimming with countless highs. Among their numerous achievements, their hit song “Rock & Roll Queen” has stood the test of time, boasting more than 100 million streams to date. Over the years, the band has played more than 1,000 shows in over 40 countries, with tours in the UK and Germany as notable highlights. They’ve also supported a range of major acts, from Oasis to Foo Fighters and AC/DC, while taking their energetic live performances to festivals like Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, and Lollapalooza.
Now, two decades after their debut, The Subways are celebrating their 20th anniversary with the release of When I’m With You, a compilation album featuring a selection of their most beloved singles, as well as two brand new tracks. The release coincides with the announcement of their anniversary tour, The Subways For Eternity, which will see them take to stages across the UK and Europe.
Celebrating 20 years and five albums into their career, The Subways mark the milestone with When I’m With You, a compilation of fan favorites and singles, alongside two new tracks. To commemorate, they also announce the The Subways For Eternity UK and European tour.
The album opens with their debut single “Oh Yeah,” capturing the dynamic energy of their live shows. It includes early hits like “With You,” “I Want To Hear What You Have Got To Say,” and “Kalifornia,” as well as mid-era favorites like “We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time” and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” It also features key songs from Uncertain Joys, such as the title track and “You Kill My Cool,” and ends with their iconic “Rock & Roll Queen,” which had a significant cultural impact, from its appearance in RocknRolla and The OC to a prominent Rimmel ad and U.S. TV performances on “The Late Show” and “The Late Late Show.”
The compilation also introduces two new tracks: “I Need To Feel You Closer,” debuted live last year, and “Passenger’s Side.” These new recordings mark the debut of drummer Camille Phillips, who joined in 2023 after Josh Morgan’s departure.
The collection reflects the band’s collaborations with renowned producers such as Butch Vig (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur), and Ian Broudie (The Lightning Seeds), with Billy Lunn also producing tracks from Uncertain Joys and their self-titled album.
Reflecting on the band’s journey, Billy Lunn shares, “Reaching 20 years is incredibly special for us. It’s a testament to doing something we love for such a long time. But what really stands out is the friendships we’ve made along the way. Our fans are everything, and we’re so grateful to them. The songs we’ve created are as much theirs as they are ours, and we’re eager to celebrate this milestone with them, surrounded by the chaos of a live show.”
Charlotte Cooper adds, “It’s been an unbelievable ride, and I’ve loved every moment of it—from the intimate gigs to the massive festival stages. We’re beyond excited to celebrate with the fans who have stuck with us all these years and the new ones who are bringing their kids to the shows. We are truly the luckiest people.”
Ian Broudie, who produced Young For Eternity, reflects, “It was a great experience working with The Subways on their debut album. They were a young band with incredible energy and great songs, and I’m really proud of the album we made together.”
The album When I’m With You is available to pre-order here and will be released on double-vinyl, CD, and digital formats. Fans who pre-order the album will gain access to exclusive pre-sale tickets for the The Subways For Eternity tour, which kicks off in November. The tour will include stops at iconic venues across the UK and Europe, including a performance at London’s Electric Ballroom. They will also return to the festival circuit with performances at events like Y Not? in the UK.
