A new teaser trailer has been released for the forthcoming comedy-drama, The Penguin Lessons, starring Steve Coogan (Philomena, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Tropic Thunder). The film, scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release on March 28, 2025, draws its narrative from the real-life experiences of Tom Michell, an Englishman whose life undergoes a significant shift following an unconventional rescue.
Directed by Peter Cattaneo MBE (The Full Monty, Military Wives, The Rocker), the film portrays Michell’s arrival in Argentina in 1976. He accepts a teaching position at a local school, encountering a society marked by political division and a student body presenting unique challenges. The central storyline revolves around the transformative effect of Michell’s rescue of a penguin from an oil-contaminated beach, setting in motion a series of events that profoundly alter his perspective.
The ensemble cast includes Jonathan Pryce, Vivian El Jaber, Björn Gustafsson, and Alfonsina Carrocio, in addition to Coogan. The screenplay is written by Jeff Pope (The Lost King, Philomena), with production credits attributed to Ben Pugh, Rory Aitken, Andy Noble, Adrián Guerra, and Robert Walak.
The Penguin Lessons made its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. It has since been presented at the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival and the 2025 Manchester Film Festival, indicating a degree of early recognition within the festival circuit. The film’s narrative explores themes of adaptation, unexpected connection, and personal transformation within a specific historical and cultural context.
