The Lathums Go Long-Haul – From Wigan’s ‘Cobblestones’ to Fresh Frontiers in the Far East and Australia

Five years on from their indie-pop breakout and having comfortably conquered the UK’s biggest stages, The Lathums are taking their Northern soul global. Armed with a fresh single and gearing up for their first-ever shows in the Far East and Australia on the horizon, 2025 is shaping up to be as beautiful as life has ever been for them.

Out this Friday, ‘Cobblestones’ (first demoed in 2018/2019) is the sound of the band hitting stride – a sharp, choppy jangle-punk single packed with a Johnny Marr-style shimmer and echoing with Clash-like urgency. The Wigan four-piece are gearing up for the world stage with a track that feels built for it – sweaty, scuffed, and as ready for the Tokyo skyline as it is the terraces of their hometown.

“’Cobblestones’ started when I was in my teens and started paying close attention to the world around me: the streets, the buildings, the way history leaves its mark,” says frontman Alex Moore. “Where I’m from, cobblestones seem to be everywhere, and they started to feel like a symbol for the stories and truths buried under modern life. The song is about what gets covered up, not just by concrete or tarmac, but by politics, ego, and time. It’s about how we build over the past and try to move on, but the past is still there, just beneath the surface.”

Fresh from selling out the O2 Apollo Manchester – twice – and having toyed with the Glasto crowds like seasoned pros, The Lathums now stretch their wings further. A colossal 14-date Matter Does Not Define Tour, a hometown blowout at Robin Park, and a HUGE summer headline at Leeds Millennium Square (July 12) have already marked 2025 as a high point. But now they turn their gaze eastward.

With ‘Cobblestones’ leading the charge as the first taste of a limited Matter Does Not Define Bonus EP (white label vinyl dropping August 22), the band are about to jet off to break new ground. First up: a landmark appearance at the Singapore Grand Prix (Oct 4), before tearing through Freo Social in Fremantle, The Triffid in Brisbane, The Factory Theatre in Sydney, and the Corner Hotel in Melbourne. The tour closes with a hotly-anticipated Tokyo debut at Space Odd (Oct 14).

Expect rough-edged riffs and anthemic arms-in-the-air catharsis – from the heart of Wigan to the wide world beyond.
