Apple TV+ will debut the Spanish-language crime drama “Women in Blue” (“Las Azules”) tomorrow, July 31, which features an all-Hispanic cast and crew, and is created by International Emmy Award-winning showrunner and director Fernando Rovzar and Pablo Aramendi.
Inspired by actual events, this ten-episode series chronicles the journey of four women who challenge the deeply entrenched, ultra-conservative social norms of 1971 Mexico by becoming the first female police force in the country’s history. Despite their initial success, the women soon realize that their induction into the force was orchestrated as a publicity stunt to deflect attention from a serial killer on the loose. As the body count rises, María (Bárbara Mori), whose determination to catch the killer becomes an obsession, Gabina (Amorita Rasgado), whose father is a renowned cop, Ángeles (Ximena Sariñana), a brilliant fingerprint analyst, and Valentina (Natalia Téllez), a young rebel, launch a secret investigation, determined to succeed where their male counterparts have failed and bring the killer to justice. The series also stars Miguel Rodarte, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Christian Tappan, and Horacio García Rojas.
In advance of the global premiere of “Women in Blue” on Apple TV+ on July 31, with new episodes subsequently released weekly through September 25, CinemaChords sat down with showrunner Fernando Rovzar and the four actors who portray the titular “Women in Blue,” Mori, Rasgado, Sariñana and Téllez who all discussed the process of getting into the mindset of these complex characters within the context of the era in which the series is set.
