After years of relentless hustle, Birmingham quartet The Clause are finally set to make their mark with the release of their debut album Victim of a Casual Thing (our review HERE) this Friday, October 24. Known for their blistering live performances and a fiercely dedicated fanbase, the band stands ready to move beyond their status as one of the UK’s most exciting underground acts.
With regular spins on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music, and a spot at the top of the iTunes Rock Chart, The Clause’s rise has been swift and steady. Their energetic performances at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, as well as on the same stage as The Reytons, DMA’s, and The Snuts, have earned them a reputation as one of the UK’s most compelling live acts.
Formed by schoolmates Pearce Macca (vocals/guitar), Jonny Fyffe (bass), and Niall Fennell (drums), the band’s lineup was completed when Macca crossed paths with guitarist Liam Deakin at a JAWS gig — a serendipitous meeting that turned their shared teenage passion for music into a full-fledged band.
Victim of a Casual Thing reflects the band’s journey from local heroes to national contenders. The album is not only a snapshot of their growth as artists, but also a raw exploration of the trials and triumphs of growing up in contemporary Britain.
“This record is soaked in the culture of growing up in the UK,” says frontman Pearce Macca. “It carries the echoes of wild nights and fragile mornings, broken relationships and faded ambitions. There’s no pretence here — just four young people trying to make sense of it all. This is the sound of feeling lost and insignificant in a city that doesn’t slow down, and the fight to rise above it.”
The album’s title, Victim of a Casual Thing, encapsulates the theme of unexpected disruption — how life can veer off course without warning. “It’s about all the ways life can throw you off track,” Macca explains. “Falling into jobs that were never meant to last, flings that leave something behind, growing up where dreams are easy to laugh at but hard to live out. Yet through all that, we’re still here — and that’s something to be proud of.”
Emotionally charged and unflinchingly honest, Victim of a Casual Thing is as much a portrait of The Clause’s evolution as it is a reflection of the times that shaped them. It’s the sound of four friends navigating chaos, turning life’s uncertainty into something bold, authentic, and defiant.
Ahead of the release of their debut album, Victim of a Casual Thing, CinemaChords’ Howard Gorman sat down with Pearce Macca to discuss the long and often difficult path that led to its creation. Reflecting on years of tireless effort, Macca opens up about the personal and professional challenges that have shaped the band’s sound, the lessons learned along the way, and the significance of finally sharing the album they’ve spent years striving towards.
