Netflix Hires Jon Spaihts to Pen ‘GEARS OF WAR’ Live-Action Film Adaptation

As reported by Variety, Netflix has enlisted Academy Award nominee Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange, Dune: Part One & Two) to write an adaptation of the hugely successful video game franchise, Gears of War.

Originally announced by Netflix in November last year, the production will be developed in collaboration with the video game’s developer The Coalition, and will be succeeded by an adult-oriented animated series set in the Gears of War universe.

The original game was released on 7 November 2006 on the Xbox 360 and went on to sell in excess of 40 million copies over the course of six instalments and three spin-offs. The game’s original narrative followed protagonist Marcus Fenix, a soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments tasked with leading a last-ditch effort to destroy the Locust Horde and save humanity.

Spaihts recently received an Oscar nomination for his writing credit on Denis Villeneuve’s Warner Bros. sci-fi blockbuster Dune, and he also co-wrote the forthcoming sequel based on Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novel, which is scheduled for a November 3, 2023 release.
