FANTASIA INTERVIEW: Sharp Satire and Gleeful Gore — ‘HOLD THE FORT’ Sets Horror-Comedy Ablaze with Hellfire

Horror-comedies featuring ragtag, hapless crews of suburbanites going toe-to-toe with the supernatural have become a mainstay in the indie scene. But Hold the Fort, the latest brainchild from director William Bagley (The Murder Podcast), elevates the genre with a wickedly funny meditation on life’s absurdity, told through a lens that’s as grotesque as it is gloriously human. And if you weren’t one of the lucky ones at the Fantasia International Film Festival to witness its world premiere before a sold-out crowd, brace yourself for round two on the 26th — but act fast, as last night’s premiere left the audience screaming for more.

At the heart of Hold the Fort is a sharp, satirical spin on the existential dread of modern homeownership. The notion of finally becoming a homeowner is supposed to represent the pinnacle of the American Dream — but in Hold the Fort, it’s more like an all-inclusive invitation to perdition, with monsters lying in wait just beyond the white picket fence. Lucas (Chris Mayers, “Ozark”) and Jenny (Haley Leary, The Out-Laws) think they’ve secured their perfect slice of suburban serenity — only to find their ‘dream home’ is far more Hell, Sweet Hell than Home Sweet Home. Enter the overzealous Homeowners Association and a veritable legion of demonic creatures, eager to turn the next HOA board meeting into an affair of truly bloody propriety.

What follows is a deliciously deranged concoction of splatter, laughs, and chaos. Hold the Fort delivers its fair share of bloody gore and gleeful dismemberment, but it’s also armed with a clever streak that keeps the insanity grounded. With its nonstop parade of practical effects and grotesque deaths, this movie doesn’t just revel in bloodletting — but rather, it forces you to confront what it means to live in a world where monsters lurk behind every lawnmower. What’s more, the filmmakers know exactly when to pump the brakes — never tipping too far into slapstick, a pitfall so often fatal to horror-comedy efforts. Instead, Bagley and his team keep things darkly hilarious and unrelentingly urgent, ensuring the stakes feel real and keeping the audience fully invested.

To mark the film’s world premiere, CinemaChords’ Howard Gorman sat down with director William Bagley, producer Tim Reis, and actors Chris Mayers and Levi Burdick to discuss how they brought their fantastical suburban nightmare to life. They shared how they transformed the all-too-real fear of the HOA into a gateway for horror, with a picture-perfect suburban façade masking something far more hellish beneath. The team also revealed how they navigated the intricate balance between blood-soaked horror and razor-sharp humor, keeping the absurdity in check without sacrificing emotional depth. The result is a film that never tips into pure slapstick, instead using humor to elevate the stakes and anchor the audience in the chaotic, absurd world of Hold the Fort. As Bagley fittingly sums the film up: “Hopefully, through all the blood, laughs, fights, and gags, you leave the film feeling inspired to tackle whatever life throws at you.”
