Apple TV+ has today announced that its ten-episode darkly comedic mystery thriller “Sunny” will premiere globally in July 2022.
Created by Katie Robbins (“The Affair,” “The Last Tycoon”), who also serves as showrunner, and Lucy Tcherniak (“Station Eleven,” “The End of the F***ing World”) as executive producer and director, “Sunny” stars Emmy Award nominee and multi-hyphenate Rashida Jones (“On the Rocks,” “The Other Black Girl,” “Quincy”) as an executive producer. The show also stars Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, YOU, annie the clumsy and Jun Kunimura.
Based on the book “Dark Manual” by Japan-based award-winning Irish writer Colin O’Sullivan, “Sunny”, the series takes place in Kyoto, where American woman Suzie’s (Jones) life is upended when her husband and son mysteriously disappear in a plane crash. As a poor substitute, she receives Sunny, a new class of domestic robot made by her husband’s electronics company. Initially resenting Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, Suzie gradually forms an unexpected bond with the robot as they unravel the dark truth behind her family’s disappearance, becoming entangled in a dangerous world she never new existed.

Produced for Apple TV+ by A24, “Sunny” is written and executive produced by Robbins, through her shingle Babka Pictures. A24 and Jones also serve as executive producers.
This series represents the second collaboration between Apple, A24, and Jones following the global premiere of Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed film On the Rocks. Jones recently starred in Apple’s global hit series “Silo,” which is based on Hugh Howey’s New York Times best-selling dystopian novel trilogy.
“Sunny” will premiere globally with the first two episodes on Wednesday July 10, 2024, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through September 4.
